What it worked out on its own
Starting split gives the viewer two things to look at before they have looked at either. The split has to arrive.
Each half is scaled with its origin pulled to the seam, so it shows the middle of its own picture rather than an arbitrary vertical slice of a 16:9 frame.
Both labels sit against the divider, so one saccade reads both. Captions in opposite corners are two separate reads.
