What it worked out on its own
Cross-fading an icon into a wordmark is two objects pretending to be one, and the join always shows. Here the plate's width is a single animated number and there is nothing to join.
The corner radius travels with the width — from a squircle's 22% down to a pill's half-height — which is what makes it read as one shape changing rather than one shape scaled.
The icon holds for eleven frames before anything opens. An icon that starts opening as it arrives never registers as an icon.
