What it worked out on its own
A cross-fade between two portraits gives you a third face nobody has. An iris keeps both pictures whole at every frame, which is the only honest way to put two people in one shot.
Photographs, then the date, then the word. Announcing first and showing afterwards spends the surprise on a caption.
The rim of the iris exists only while it is moving — a hard circle sitting on a finished frame is a vignette nobody asked for.
