What it worked out on its own
The whole design is the stops. A timeline that scrolls at a constant rate is a credits crawl: nothing is emphasised because nothing is dwelt on.
Position is a stepped curve built from the marker index and an eased fraction of the leg — a pure function of the frame, so the stops land on exact frames rather than wherever a spring settled.
Each card has a window rather than an instant: up as the run into it finishes, held through the stop, gone as the next run begins. Tied to the stop alone it was on screen for less than half the piece.
