What it worked out on its own
Alternating the direction of the move per shot is what stops eight pans reading as one long zoom. The eye notices repetition long before it notices motion.
Eighteen frames of dissolve. This is the one place in the library where a cross-fade is right: a documentary reel is about time passing, and a hard cut says "and then".
Captions live on their own shot and fade faster than the picture, so two of them are never legible at once during an overlap.
