What it worked out on its own
The beat is one second exactly, because a countdown you cannot count along with is not a countdown. The arm sweeps once, the dial empties once, the numeral is struck as the arm passes twelve.
Each numeral is hit, not placed: a second copy in accent, screen-blended and offset sideways, catches up over eight frames like a mis-registered print.
The next numeral is already arriving while the last is still leaving. Cut exactly on the tick and the screen is empty for three frames, which reads as stalled.
Motion is silent, so the hand-off is sold by one frame of white — the picture doing what the sound would have done.
